Neal J. Weinreb, M.D., FACP is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Downstate Medical Center (summa cum laude). After a residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship and faculty position at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, N.Y., he practiced Hematology and Medical Oncology in South Florida. Dr. Weinreb, the director of the University Rersearch Foundation for Lysosomal Storage Diseases in Coral Springs Florida, now devotes his entire professional attention to clinical research and management of patients with LSDs, especially Gaucher disease and Fabry disease. Dr. Weinreb is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Physicians. Dr Weinreb has academic appointments as Voluntary Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology) at the NOVA Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. He serves on the Ethics Committee of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology. He has been honored with the Humanitarian Award of the Israel Cancer Research Fund and the “See the Light” Award of the Matthew Forbes Romer Foundation for Children’s Genetic Diseases of the Brain.
Dr. Weinreb became interested in Gaucher disease and other LSDs more than 30 years ago as a NIH Research Associate for Dr. Roscoe Brady. Dr. Weinreb demonstrated that Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder, and helped formulate some of the purification procedures which eventually led to the production of CerezymeŽ. Dr. Weinreb is an active participant in the Gaucher and Fabry Registries and serves as the US Southeast Regional Coordinator and Chair of the International Collaborative Gaucher Group North American section and as Co-chair of the ICGG International Board of Scientific Advisors.
Dr Weinreb is also interested in Jewish history, archaeology, and law. He enjoys traveling, hiking, and fishing. Last but not least, he is a proud and devoted husband, father of 3 wonderful children, and, with the greatest joy, a certifiably indulgent Grandpa to 8 beautiful grandchildren.
