I was born in Kiev, Ukraine. From my early childhood I was often sick. My parents, and later myself, had to pay attention to my abnormal blood test, to my enlarged lived and spleen. When I was 37 years old, my spleen was very enlarged, my hemoglobin dropped little by little… I actually lucky at that time my doctors planned, but did not surgically removed my spleen. I was very sure that if I would not be treated for my medical problem (at that time I did not know what it was), I would die and leave my, at that time 6 years old daughter.

When I was 40, 12/01/1991 I had chance to move to US as a refugee with my family. By October, 1992 I diagnosed by Dr. Michael Grinberg with Gaucher Disease. I never will forget that moment, Dr.Grinberg went to my Maimonides Hospital room with a big smile and rushing words from his mouth: ”Now I know what is your problem, you have a Gaucher Disease”(at that time I had Hg 6.0). I am receiving enzyme replacement therapy since than. From that time I had many problems with my medical insurance. I deeply grateful to Barbara Lichtenstein who always helped me with my medical coverage- Care or Care+ program for my enzyme replacement. Thank you all. Liliya Press, 55 years old.
